Overview:Lithium thionyl chloride battery ( LiSOCl2 battery ) is one of the highest specific energy batteries in the practical battery series. The specific energy can reach 590W/h/kg and 1100 (per cubic centimeter of watt-hour). The highest specific energy is obtained from large capacity and low discharge rate large size batteries. Li/SOCl2 batteries are fabricated in a wide range of sizes and structures, ranging from cylindrical carbon-coated and wound-up electrode-structured batteries as low as 400 mAh to square batteries as high as 10,000 0Ah and many batteries with special sizes and structures to meet special requirements. The LiSOCl 2 system originally had problems of safety and voltage hysteresis, especially when the LiSOCl 2 battery was discharged or overdischarged at high discharge rate. However, when the LiSOCl 2 battery was stored at high temperature and then discharged at low temperature, the voltage hysteresis appeared obviously.

The LiSOCl2 battery consists of a lithium negative electrode, a carbon cathode and a nonaqueous SOCl2:LiAlCl4 electrolyte. Thionyl chloride is both an electrolyte and a positive active substance. Other electrolyte salts, such as LiAlCl4, have been used in specially designed batteries, but electrode performance varies with the formulation of the electrolyte. The composition of the anode, cathode and SOCl2 should be internal high pressure and external short circuit.

The discharge performance of these batteries is better than that of carbon coated electrodes under medium current.
