Lithium Thionyl Chloride Cell Provides End-Of-Life Indication

CTECHi Batteries, a pioneer manufacturer of lithium batteries, has just introduced an improved version of its of the indication at end-of-life, allowing end users to optimize the service life of the original battery while at the same time ensuring continuous service through scheduled battery replacements.

Lithium thionyl chloride batteries ( lithium thionyl chloride battery packs )are typically used in applications where battery replacement or recharging is either impossible or extremely difficult. Applications such as automatic meter reading, wireless remote sensors, tracking devices for homeland security, oceanographic devices, etc. are often not easily accessible (such as the top of a mountain or the bottom of the ocean) or are not consumer replaceable (sealed devices). Besides being irreplaceable, batteries suited to these applications must perform reliably in very harsh environments, and provide an operational life span of up to 20 years.

While lithium thionyl chloride cell works at a very stable voltage over almost their entire operational life span, the lack of a drop in voltage over time has not permitted for an indication of battery state of charge. In many cases, batteries are replaced too early according to estimations of amount of remaining battery life, even though the cells could continue to operate for years to come. By comparison, CTECHi batteries offer the posibility for end-of-life indication. The new improvements come in two distinct versions:

Li-Socl2 Battery

- 3.6v system with a 5% end-of-life indication (when the battery runs out of 95% of its capacity, a remote indicator can inform the end users that 5% of operational life span remains)

- 3.9v system with a 10% end-of-life indication

Based upon the CTECHi system they chose they will be informed 1 or 2 years before the battery reaches its end-of-life - providing more than enough time to arrenge replacements. This will allow longer operating time for devices and save on replacement costs.

Maintenance trips to remote sensing devices will be reduced and system reliability will be increased.

Available in a wide variety of sizes from AA to DD and multi-cell packs, CTECHi batteries feature bobbin type construction, plus a unique hybrid layer capacitor, which offers unique performance advantages, including:

o Higher voltage - 3.6V and 3.9V versus 3.0Vo Higher capacity - e.g. 19Ah for D size cell (versus 7 Ah for other Lithium batteries). Other sizes at equally higher capacity. o Lower self discharge - less than 1% per year (versus 5% per year with spiral wound) o Lower ESR (Equivalent Serial Resistance) o Widest operating temperature -40ºC to 85ºC (versus 0ºC to 60ºC) o Greater safety - contrasted with other Lithium chemistries o Glass-to-metal hermetic seal to protect against leakage. o ISO 9001 certified and UL-recognized
