Why is this classification important? Because lithium battery itself is a comprehensive and large concept, lithium batteries, lithium ion batteries, lithium ion polymer batteries, more than a few words in which there are articles, the cost difference is also very different.


Lithium-ion batteries are generally referred to as lithium-ion batteries, but strictly speaking, they are quite different from lithium-ion batteries. Lithium batteries are lithium primary batteries, which use lithium metal or lithium alloy as anode material and contain pure lithium metal. They are disposable batteries using non-aqueous electrolyte solution.


Lithium-ion batteries are disposable batteries. Does lithium-ion batteries mean rechargeable lithium batteries? Neither. Generalized rechargeable lithium batteries are composed of a graphite negative electrode, a positive electrode using cobalt, manganese or iron phosphate, and an electrolyte used to transport lithium ions. But there are also disposable lithium-ion batteries, which use lithium metal or lithium-intercalated materials as negative electrodes.

As for lithium-ion polymer batteries, the extra word "polymer" emphasizes that the electrolyte is colloidal, solid or semi-solid lithium-ion batteries. The reason why lithium-ion polymer batteries are so tall is that "solid polymer" replaces the traditional liquid electrolyte.


The advantages of using colloidal or solid polymer instead of liquid organic solvent electrolyte are that the polymer can be made into arbitrary shape to adapt to different equipment, with high adaptability, and the degree of freedom of industrial design of equipment can be guaranteed. For example, mobile phones (18650 batteries with fixed shapes and liquid electrolytes are obviously not available on today's smartphones). Secondly, the electrolyte in the polymer state has higher security: the liquid electrolyte will explode under the extreme conditions of short circuit and high temperature and high pressure, while the polymer will only expand and bulge out, and in the extreme state, explosive combustion will not occur.
