New 3D Printing Technology Can Make Cylindrical Rechargeable Lithium Ion Battery

3D printing lithium-ion battery has been able to power LED

Most lithium ion batteries in the market are rectangular or cylindrical. In theory, 3D printing technology can print almost any shape of the entire device, including batteries, structures and electronic components. The problem with lithium-ion batteries, however, is that polymers, PLAs, are not ionic conductors for 3D printing. Researchers hope to find a way to print complete lithium-ion batteries using low-cost and widely used fuse-made (FFF) 3D printers. 3D printing of arbitrary shaped batteries will change the limitations of product design.

In order to improve the ionic conductivity of PLA, researchers will be used in 3D printing of PLA implanted electrolyte solutions. In addition, they combine graphene or multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) into anodes or cathodes, respectively, to help improve the conductivity of batteries.

To demonstrate the battery's potential, the researchers printed a 3D LED bracelet with integrated lithium-ion batteries. And the bracelet battery can power the green LED for about 60 seconds.

The team pointed out that the capacity of the first generation of 3D printing batteries is far lower than that of commercial batteries. Future work may include developing ways to increase the capacity of 3D printing batteries, such as "replacing polymer-based anodes and cathodes with 3D printable pastes that can accommodate high-load active materials, and printing in series with polymer separators, and using alternative nanomaterials (such as reduced graphene oxide) that may be used as conductors at the same time." Electrical packing and active materials do not require the use of inactive conductive materials and low conductivity active materials. Or, encapsulating the active material, LTO and LMO using conductive fillers before mixing in the polymer can improve the electrical contact of the active material in the presence of a low concentration in the polymer. These results should help those seeking to create energy storage materials and devices that can print batteries in 3D in any shape.
