Ternary lithium battery is a kind of polymer with three metal elements: nickel (Ni), cobalt (Co), manganese (Mn) or aluminum (Al) as cathode. The electrolyte is mainly lithium hexafluorophosphate. Nickel is a kind of active metal. Its main function is to increase the energy density of batteries and bring about higher endurance. Cobalt is also a kind of active metal, which can inhibit the mixing of cations, thus improving the stability and service life of batteries, and cobalt also determines the charging and discharging speed and efficiency of batteries. The main role of manganese or aluminium is to improve safety and stability.

The principle of solid state batteries is not different from that of ternary lithium batteries, but the liquid electrolyte is replaced by solid state. The obvious advantage is that solid-state batteries are much better in energy density and stability than lithium-ion batteries.
Solid state electrolyte of solid state battery is non-flammable, non-volatile, and there is no leakage and lithium dendrite phenomenon of lithium ion battery, so its safety is much higher. And with solid electrolytes, power batteries will become lighter, smaller, and even more flexible. This means that after the popularization of solid-state batteries, electric vehicles will have great breakthroughs in space and endurance.
Solid-state batteries are good, but they are still in the laboratory stage. Considering the high rate and fast charge of composite materials is a difficult point in solid-state battery research. Current solid-state electrolyte materials only apply to one aspect of the characteristics.
